Convection vaporizers, conduction vaporizers and hybrid vaporizers – what’s the difference?

If you want to replace traditional smoking with vaporization, you have a very important choice before you. Choosing a perfect device that suits your needs. Before you go to specific brands and models, you need to make your first major decision: convection, conduction or hybrid? Sounds complicated? Don’t worry, these are just the mechanisms by which our vaporizers can satisfy us. To help you make the right choice, here is a handful of necessary information!

Conductive vaporizers

The conduction method is the older one, which does not mean that it is worse. What is it about? In conduction devices, the herbs are heated by direct contact with the heat source. The walls of the device’s heating chamber are responsible for the heat transfer. As a result:

• vapor is produced very quickly and is produced abundantly from the very first inhalation. You don’t have to wait for the vaporizer to start producing big clouds.
• the vaporizer uses little energy – less need to charge makes most of the portable models are conduction based.

When choosing a conduction model, you have to take into account the following:

• the steam will have a relatively mild and delicate flavor – not as aromatic as convection device
• you will achieve the best results when you burn all the herbs in one session. Long pauses in inhalation may result in the loss of some of the material
• it requires filling with herbs “to the full” – the condition for good heat distribution in the heating chamber is tightness.

Convection vaporizers

In convection vaporizers, the herbs do not come into direct contact with the heater and are heated with hot air. The advantages of this solution are:

• maximum aromatic vapor – its taste will be more dimensional and “fuller”;
• short heating time – only during inhalation, which means that you can take long breaks between consecutive inhalations, and dry won’t be wasted.

It is worth remembering, however, that convection, due to the higher level of technical advancement, is also a technology that requires more energy. Portable convection vaporizers can discharge faster, and the devices themselves will require a larger investment. It should also be borne in mind that many convection models take longer to produce dense, intense steam at the start of operation. For example: the heating time for the Volcano Classic Vaporizer model is from 3 to 5 minutes, and for the model Boundless Tera Vaporizer it’s 60 seconds.

Hybrid, i.e. a combination of both solutions

There are more and more hybrid vaporizers on the market, i.e. those that use the advantages of both methods described above. The combination of convection and conduction means that the herbs are heated both directly and with the use of hot air. Most often, it is pre-heated by the walls of the device (by conduction) and then reaches the maximum temperature using convection. This is how you manage to keep the balance between the speed of creating a large cloud and the maximum vapor aroma. The proportions in which both technologies are used in hybrids are different and depend on the selected device.
